Moxons Beach Club is a newly built boutique hotel and restaurant with 24 rooms, and is to be found some 8 miles east from Ocho Rios. It is on four levels, cascading down to its own private beach protected by two large piers and is on one mile reef, so snorkelling here is quite outstanding. Indeed you might even be accompanied by the lifeguard who will be spear fishing, and that is a great experience in itself.

What makes Moxons Beach Club so special and different is a combination of things. It starts with the hands on owner Miss Mac who is always around and is a veritable font of information about everything from the history of Moxons to the best local restaurants, trips, days out. She is the tip of a very impressive iceberg when it comes to the quality of her staff. Without exception the staff will spoil you. So much so they will spoil you for every other hotel that you go to, because you won’t meet better anywhere. They actively encourage their guests to see all of Jamaica, and experience local life, and make excellent arrangements for you. If you want to swim with dolphins, tube down the White River, go horse riding bareback in the sea, find the best jerk cooking, the best rum in the best bars, you name it and someone will organise it for you.

You will also be spoiled by the food. It is authentic Jamaican, and it freshly cooked to order, so it will take a good twenty minutes, which is a good excuse to have another cocktail. Even the breakfasts are interesting with the choice of Continental, Authentic Jamaican, Moxons Spa or Canadian. The menus are not expensive either, and the food has been variously described as “perfect”, and “Much better than your normal Caribbean Restaurant food”. The view from the dining terrace is fabulous as well, and the fact that the service will be immaculate will come as no surprise.

Possibly the best description of Moxons Beach Club is that it is a magnificent Caribbean Hideaway, because you could pass the gate, and only think you are seeing a fairly anonymous property. It is only after entering you realise you are in a hotel of some substance and class. It is like arriving in a different world, and this almost unknown boutique hotel is set to have an international reputation. The best advice is book to go now, especially if you are an independent type traveller who isn’t into the glitzy and brash all inclusives.
